Making Lanterns from Milk Jugs!

Running short of time and idea to make lanterns for the festival?

Beautiful lanterns, or bizarre ones if it is the way you want, can be made quickly.

What you need:

Rinse the milk jug and remove label.

Cut opening that is big enough to put  a tea light candle, or a LED one, in.

Cut more shape for your own design.

Give color and patterns to the milk jug by either gluing colored tissue paper or paint.

Here is a collection of what people do with their milk jugs. Start your creativity now!

Ocra lanterns at sunset

And they are lit for the first time. The lake is perfectly still. I like the tranquility given by the lanterns and the reflection, the sunset, and the sky lantern at the back.

My TA named me as Terminal Angel because I was born at the old CPR terminal in Vancouver Downtown Waterfront. Now my birthplace is called Waterfront Station.

I like to capture light and reflection whenever I can. I am particularly fond of splashing water on the the terminal screen. The illusions and reflections resulted are smoothing!

Do you like the photos I took?

  • The first one was taken during the Night for all Saints taken place at the Mountainview graveyard in Vancouver BC.
  • The second one is one of the giant tank I made. It was on display during the Illuminares festival last year. It won the "People Awad!" Actually building lanterns is one of my passion as lanterns emit light and can cast reflection when they float on water.
  • The third one is one of my mirror reflection series. This particular one taken in front of the Clearbrook library in Abbotsford BC.

Starting of Ann Reflection

I always fancied about lights and shadows. The compassion first took on me on the late, dark, wet winter evening when I had to walk to the bus station after writing a LPI test. The whole UBC campus was in a ghost state. But when I walking by the new chemistry building, the rectangulr lights came from a row of window above me remind me I am still on earth and living.
The chemistry building is a big lantern. A lantern, afterall, uses to illumine the path in dark.

There are several lanterns I made in the year of 2005.

This year's "Parade of all souls" Cancelled

How's every body Halloween?

Parade of all Souls used to be a very fun event on the second last Saturday before Halloween. It took place at Commerial Drive of city of Vancouver. It is one of the signature event hold by Public Dream Society.
Lots of performers, those on crank, playing fire, or music were together with thousands of participants in which most of them are costumed, if not all.

However, since the event of "Parade of all souls" was too successful and attracted too many people, this year the event is cancelled. Replaced this event is a quiet memorial and community shrine at Mountainview cementary. The event called "A night of all souls". Some of the participants were still costumed. But the focus of the event are on those who passed away. The atmosphere was calm as well as oriental.

Major path was lit by candles on ground. The venue was decorated with prayer flags, lanterns, flowers and individual shrine.

"modern" lantern building material

I contacted Taiwanese-Canadian Culture club for more "modern" lantern making material. The Teacher Lim invented specialized paper-coated wire for easy-benting, and glueing.

Today is the mid-autumn festival

Today is the Chinese mid-autumn festival. It is when the Chinese family will re-unite, gather to eat moon-cakes, light lanterns and enjoy the moon. As I just returned from Waterton yesterday, I am a little too tired to make a new lantern for the mid-Autumn festival. Nevertheless, I have the "duck' lantern and the hawk lantern I made earlier this September.

>
> BTW, this year's mid autumn festival concidence with the first day of Japanese invasion to China sixty years ago. I will remember it.
